Van Shelving Ideas for Electricians and Plumbers

Electricians and plumbers both work from vans, but their storage needs couldn't be more different. Electricians need neat organisation for cables, testers and small components. Plumbers need to handle long awkward pipework, fittings and heavy tools. Here's how to get your van shelving right for your trade.

Van Shelving for Electricians

Cable management is everything for electricians. Look for shelving with dedicated cable drum holders or rails — these keep your cable reels tidy and prevent tangling. Small parts storage is critical too. A row of small plastic bins or drawer units for connectors, terminals, junction boxes and consumables will save you enormous amounts of time on site.

Consider a top shelf for your test equipment — multimeters, voltage testers and inspection cameras are expensive and fragile, so keeping them at eye level in a dedicated spot prevents damage and means you always know where they are.

A fold-out work surface is a great addition for electricians who need to prep cable or work on consumer units in the van.

Van Shelving for Plumbers

Plumbers need to think about length and weight. Overhead pipe carriers that run along the roof of the van load area are essential for carrying copper pipe, plastic pipe and conduit without it rolling around or getting damaged.

For fittings and small parts, a drawer unit with shallow drawers works brilliantly — you can organise by fitting type and size so you can grab exactly what you need without digging through a bag.

Heavy items like power tools, pipe cutters and pressure testing equipment should go low down, ideally in drawer units bolted to the floor, to keep your centre of gravity low and driving safe.

Don't forget a dedicated area for your torch, pipe freeze kit and drain rods — items you need fast in an emergency.

What Electricians and Plumbers Have in Common

Both trades benefit hugely from a fully lined van (ply lining protects bodywork and gives you surfaces to fix racking to), good lighting inside the van load area, and a secure lockable system for overnight tool security.

Final Thoughts

Your van is your office, your workshop and your warehouse all in one. Getting the shelving right for your specific trade is one of the best investments you can make. The time you save every day adds up to real money over the course of a year.
